Olympic 2012 Showdowns: Bolt Vs Gay. Who will become the fastest man on earth?

Freestyle Watches | 2012 Olympic Preview

One word: SPEED

London 2012 is lining up to have some of the most incredible showdowns in Olympic history. One of the top face-offs garnering some serious media hype is Usain Bolt vs. Tyson Gay in the 100 meters. While Bolt dominated the 2008 Olympics and 2009 World Championships and is regarded as the fastest man on the planet, Tyson Gay is the current American World Record holder and considered top contender to upset Bolt. According to Former British sprinter, Darren Campbell, Tyson Gay has what it takes mentality as well as on the track having posted a 9.79 second mark in a race in which he claimed he was only 75% fit. If true, this gives to reason that at full strength Tyson could get down to the 9.42 second mark to match or beat Usain Bolt. On paper this looks like a great matchup, but the rubber will meet the road in London 2012. So who are you betting on? www.freestyleusa.com

Freestyle Watches | Diving Dreams | The Yongala

The Yongala | Arguably one of the best dives in the world

Diving Dreams is the newest category to the revamped Freestyle Watch blog. This is where we’ll post some the world’s best Diving destinations, whether you’re a recreational or die hard dive enthusiast; you’ll sure want to have some of these watering holes on your bucket list. Today’s we highlight The Yongala. The Yongala is a shipwreck located in Queensland, Australia about 90km southeast off the coast of Townsville. Due to having no telegraph facilities, The Yongala was served no warning of the Cyclone ravaged seas she was headed for. As a result, she sank during the cyclone in 1911, killing 122 people, as well as a racehorse called Moonshine and a red Lincolnshire bull. 70 years later, in 1981, the Yongala was given official protection under the Historic Shipwrecks Act. At 109 meters long, the Yongala sits at the ocean floor listing to the starboard with her bow pointing north. Ask anybody that has experienced the wreck and they’ll tell you it may be the best dive in the world. It’s is just so full of life from see manta rays, sea snakes, octopuses, turtles, bull sharks, tiger sharks, clouds of fish and spectacular coral. Keep in mind, however, that it is prohibited for anybody to enter the ship and you’ll risk being arrested and fined. Pair this amazing dive destination with the new Freestyle Trench dive watch and start living your diving dreams.

Santa Fe, NM | MARCH 13, 2012 – Outside, America’s leading multimedia active-lifestyle brand, announced today the winners of the first Outside Active Travel Awards. The awards will be featured in the April 2012 issue of Outside Magazine, available March 13, 2012 and online at Outside Online.

To select this year’s awards, Outside tapped our global network of correspondents to showcase a definitive roundup of the best new adventures, exotic retreats, beaches, local food, bars with a view, on-time airlines, screaming deals, gorgeous islands, and more. The awards reflect more than just a collection of unforgettable trips—it’s a road map to life-changing experiences. The issue also highlights a list of the best online travel tools as well a roundup of Outside’s all-time favorite destinations.

“Outside magazine has long been one of the world’s most trusted advisors for active and adventurous travelers,” says Outside editor Christopher Keyes. “This year we’ve bottled up 35 years of collective wisdom to select our first Outside Travel Awards, an annual edit franchise that honors the best trips, hotels, lodges, luggage, islands, and new destinations that will be an invaluable travel resource for years to come.”

In celebration of the Outside Active Travel Awards, Outside will launch the “What Trip Are You?” Facebook promotion, which will allow members of the Outside community to take an adventure travel quiz to determine what type of vacation best suits their adventure style from five categories. The categories include: Enlightened Explorer, Powder Hound, River Runner, World Traveler, and Adrenaline Junkie. Participants will be able to choose between a series of travel favorites—Hotel or rustic lodge? Tropical escape or powdery heaven? Guide or no guide?—that will lead to their ultimate adventure travel escape.

Five grand prize winners (one per category) will get the chance to go on their dream adventure provided by Outside’s travel partners. Trip options include: Dory or raft trip down the Grand Canyon with OARS, Heli-ski in AK’s Chugach range with Valdez Heli Ski Guides and Tsaina Lodge, Safari in Botswana with Wilderness Safaris and South African Airways, Multi-sport in Machu Picchu and Galapagos with REI Adventures, and an Andes to Amazon multisport trip with BikeHike Adventures. In addition, participants who take the quiz can come back for daily adventure travel gear prizes.

“We are using social media to allow our audience the opportunity to further interact with our award-winning travel content,” noted Jen Wittman, Director of Marketing at Outside. “The ‘What Trip Are You?’ campaign uses both Facebook and the Friend2friend app platform to celebrate our readers’ diverse active travel interests. With more than $90,000 on trips and prize giveaways, we expect a huge response from our engaged, adventurous fans.”

Coffee with Bede

21 Sep

Bede Durbidge

Bede Durbidge | Focused

With the 2011 Hurley Pro in town we got to spend some time with Bede Durbidge before the event started. Unfortunately the waves were meager on this particular day so we didn’t shoot any surf action; instead we just pounded some coffee and shot some lifestyles. Our main goal was to get some images of Bede in the new Killer Shark Tide for some upcoming ads in Surfer Magazine, Transworld Surf and Surfline. We can’t wait until the new Shark Collection is released to the public, and in particular the new Killer Shark Tide. We made a major upgrade to the bands, switching from Polyurethane to Silicone. The Silicone Bands are much softer and more comfortable than polyurethane, plus they resist fading and changing colors better than the previous models. Here are some outtakes of Coffee with Bede. He’s sporting the Killer Shark Tide in grey, due out by November 2011. Unfortunately, only a couple days after these photos were taken Bede lost out in the 2011 Hurley Pro due to lack of waves. He only needed a measly 5 point ride to advance and the ocean went flat on him. But Bede knows as well as anybody, that’s just the way contest surfing goes. You can bet Bede will come back with a vengeance during the European Leg of the WT. Speaking of the contest, how are Kelly Slater and Owen Wright making their 3rd Final in a row? It’s unbelievable, and their performance at trestles was mind blowing. Congrats to Kelly Slater for taking the win again. Enjoy. Coffee with Bede. www.sharkbrand.com

Cory Lopez Free Surfing Ballito

20 Sep

Cory Lopez

Cory Lopez captured in Ginger-Vision

You may remember the WQS early in the year at Ballito, South Africa in which the waves were pretty much as good as it gets for a contest. It was pumping; guys were getting shacked of their heads dropping 10’s like it was nothing. Cory Lopez was one of the guys who scored a perfect 10 in one of the early rounds before having a shocker and losing his very next heat. When all was said and done, it was Pat Gaduaskas taking the win over John John Florence. But this post is not about the contest, it’s about the incredible free surfing that went down in and around the contest before during and after. Here’s a video Cory Lopex from Blake Kueny aka Ginger-Vision. Clearly Cory is having more fun than a kid in a candy store on Ballito’s fun ramps and hollow sections. Damn good surf.
