2010 Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race

31 Aug

The start of the 2010 Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race

What lies beneath?

The 2010 Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race went down last weekend under relatively calm seas and favorable weather. It was the 35th running of the race, and with all the recent shark sitings, one would think this year was maybe a bit more exciting than years past. Of course, over the 32 mile ocean trek we didn’t hear any commotion about shark sitings, just a couple sun fish and a grey whale. Nick Meistrell captured some great pics, scroll through (more…)

The Dark Side of the Lens

30 Aug

This is an awesome piece on the dedication, passion, and sacrifice it takes to be a surf photographer. It’s one thing to succeed in the warmth of tropical waters, but to thrive is the harsh environment of the North Atlantic is another. Whether you give a crap about surfing or not, you’ll agree Mickey Smith is a bonifide legend if you take 6 minutes to watch The Dark Side of the Lens. Surfing in Ireland is hardcore, documenting it like Mickey Smith is heroic.

The Scorpion Dismount

Ryan Conners and the Scorpion Discount

This Scorpion is going to hurt

Ryan Conners living up to the age old rule that you have pay to play. In skateboarding those payments are usually in the form of painfull crashes. In this case, Ryan found himself in the unfavorable Scorpion position. Ryan said it didn’t really hurt that bad and that it was actually funny in the end, but then again this kid is way tougher than you and i.

Keith Lidberg goes Triple Kink

28 Aug

When hitting a rail like this, you really have got to want it. This is not something you can do half heartedly. Just ask Keith Lidberg as he goes “all in” to conquer this scary triple kink rail. You can also see the full photo sequence on page 44-45 of the September 2010 Issue of Alliance Wakeboard Magazine.

The Wedge Pumps Video

27 Aug

Here’s proof that a photo can be deceiving or more importantly, a good photographer has the ability to make chaos look perfect. While our post yesterday showed photos of some perfect moments, this video proves that most of the photos where just moments from destruction. The Wedge rules all surfers, always has always will. Enjoy.

Did he make it?

The Wedge has been pumping. Many of the usual suspects where in the lineup such as the Wedgendary (thanks Ghetto Surf) Spencer Pirdy, Bobby Okvist, Rad Chad, Victor Done and Jarrod Cassidy to name a few. There was even a cameo by Keith Malloy, who pulled one of the (more…)

Revenge of the Bull

Revenge of the Bull

A Bull with a vertical leap like Michael Jordan.

Can you say animals gone wild. First a crazy increase in Shark sitings around the world and now this Bull Fighting tragedy in Tafalla, Spain? Bull Fighting is not really our thing. Seems to be a really crappy tradition and apparently this Bull was over it. Sorry for the people that were injured, but it’s a wonder this type thing doesn’t happen more often. Especailly seeing the vertical leap of this revenging bull. Checking Bull Fighting off the bucket list unless viewed from the upper deck. Gnarls!

The VonZipper / Air Tahiti Nui Trials are full on! Round one is in the books and Anthony Walsh pulled a rabbit out of his hat in the dying minutes of his heat. Judging from the photo above, most would guess Walshy had no hopes of making it. Feast your eyes on the video below to see Anthony Walsh turn this closeout into a 10 Point ride. Hopefully this gives Walshy the momentum he needs to make it to the main event! Keep checking www.billabongpro.com for updates!

The Ultimate Shark Watch Collection

Drew Lewis Ultimate Shark Watch Collection

Sharks, Sharks, Sharks, lots of Sharks!

Over the years we’ve seen some pretty good Shark Watch Collections. Probably the best ever was from Eddie Villa. Actually, it was Eddie’s retro collection that really inspired us to bring all of the sharks back. Flash forward to today, and this collection from Drew Lewis has got to be one of the best collection of the newer sharks. Very impressive and stoked to see Drew has been customizing some of them. Do you have a better collection? Post an image to our Facebook page.
