You may remember the WQS early in the year at Ballito, South Africa in which the waves were pretty much as good as it gets for a contest. It was pumping; guys were getting shacked of their heads dropping 10’s like it was nothing. Cory Lopez was one of the guys who scored a perfect 10 in one of the early rounds before having a shocker and losing his very next heat. When all was said and done, it was Pat Gaduaskas taking the win over John John Florence. But this post is not about the contest, it’s about the incredible free surfing that went down in and around the contest before during and after. Here’s a video Cory Lopex from Blake Kueny aka Ginger-Vision. Clearly Cory is having more fun than a kid in a candy store on Ballito’s fun ramps and hollow sections. Damn good surf.
Bede Durbidge made a late appearance too. Unfortunately the surf had really gone to the pits by this time. But it was a good warm up for him.
It’s amazing what digital SLR cameras are doing for video these days. The video looks like it was shot before or during a down day at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Too bad Cory lost a tough heat to Bede Durbidge in round 3, but I’m sure he enjoyed surfing some of the really great waves in the region. The 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is on! Day one went down with some incredible conditions that unfortunately deteriorated throughout the day. Both Freestyle Surf Watch Team riders Cory Lopez and Bede Durbidge had tough heats, and will be competing against each other in the elimination round 2 today. For Cory Lopez it is his first trip back to Bells Beach since his 10 year stint on the World Tour ended 3 years ago, so he’s frothing for a good result to keep him on tour all year. We wish him luck!
For Bede Durbidge, he’s had great results at Bells in the past including coming in 2nd to Kelly Slater in 2008. While Bede had a shocker in the years first event at Snapper Rocks, he’s looking to rebound with a solide result at Bells. It’s about time Cory Lopez made the cut in a Taylor Steele movie. This surfing and edit is first class and well deserved. The intro was cool too, you know…Cory don’t do skits. Can’t blame him, just letting your surfing do the talking is always the best way to go. Congrats to Cory and Jerry Ricciotti for putting together a banging section.
Cory Lopez recently returned from an O’neill team trip to Morocco entitled Close Encounters. It’s a really cool concept in which O’neill’s Global riders like Cory Lopez meet up and surf with the local O’neill riders in another region. The trip featured Global riders Cory Lopez, Mark Mathews, and Shaun Cansdell together with regional surfers Axier Munian, Indar Unanue Perez, Joackim Guichard, Christophe Allary, Micah Lester, Sam Lamiroy, Paul Grey, Pascal Van der Mast, and Niels Musschoot. It’s all about sharing waves with friends while pushing the performance surfing levels and exploring new cultures without the stress of a surfing contest. Cory was obviously stoked, “We had a beautiful week of non-stop waves, some tubes, some turns. I will remember this one for a very long time, we should do it again!” Don’t just take his word for it, peep the video to see just how good they got it.

He has just released The Hunt 2010 Movie featuring Cory Lopez, Ben Bourgeois, Brett Barley, and of course the man himself, Alek Parker. The Hunt 2010 is an awesome behind the scenes look at what these guys go through to score the best surf possible during hurricane season. While sometimes they do get skunked, most of the time you’ll see them catching the best surf with the best conditions possible. And it was only Thursday
And another update from the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. On Thursday we had a couple promos with Cory Lopez and Bede Durbidge at HSS and Jacks so headed down early to survey the scene. Doesn’t anybody work? What a madhouse! It’s hard to imagine what it will be like on the weekend, but you can bet it will be standing room only throughout the entire event area. So were making the official claim, the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing is the biggest circus Huntington Beach has ever seen. This may be a dream for some people and a nightmare for others. Depending on your view of big events like this you will either join the masses on the weekend or run like heck in the other direction. We advise you join the masses, especially if you’re a dude. You have never seen so many beautiful girls running around in tiny bikinis in your entire life. It is mindboggling and wonderful. You don’t have to give a darn about surfing either, there’s so much going on in the event area you may not even make it to watch any surfing. Plus the waves were really tiny and slow, so the action away from the ocean was generally more exciting. Good thing the swell from Hurricane Eugene is set to pump in Friday through the weekend. As we meandered through the crowded event area, we were lucky enough to catch The Sounds sound checking for their show later in the day. They sounded awesome, especially on the beach! Cory Lopez | Setting the Shark Watch
With the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing in full swing we headed down to check out some of the action and catch Cory Lopez in the first heat of the morning. While the waves on offer were weak and meager, the boys still put on an amazing show. With Cory being sponsored by Freestyle, we may be a bit biased, but he got robbed and lost out by .6 of a point. The backside reverse he pulled in the last minute of the heat was like hitting a 3 at the buzzer in basketball. It was clutch and he should have been awarded the points needed to move on. Regardless, he surfed really well and you can bet he’ll get them next time.

Freestyle rider Cory Lopez is in the middle of his annual trip to Hawaii for the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing and to mix it up with the rest of the pros in the 7 Mile Miracle. Just about every major surf clothing brand has a house set up for its riders so Cory is kicking it with his main sponsor, O’Neill. Lucky for us mainlanders, O’Neill documents just about everything these guys do from every surf session to behind the scenes shenanigans.
