Espn Action Sports | Cory Lopez Interview | Scratching at the Door | June 2011 | It’s always nice to see a team rider get the lead story on an ESPN site. This time it’s Cory Lopez on espn.go.com/action (click image above for full interview and photos on ESPN.go.com), and he’s sharing his insights into the new pro tour and his thoughts on requalifying for the World Tour. We are proud to keep Cory on time for all his heats with his signature Lopex III Watch. Visit the watch shop to explore all the colorways of the Lopex III. When you have a guy like Cory Lopez testing you waterproof watches, you know they are going to get a serious water resistance test. Especially when he’s surfing heavy waves like Teahupoo or Pipe, if a watch claiming to be waterproof or water resistant holds up in those conditions, you know it’s going to perform well at your local beachbreak. Peep the video below for Cory Lopez conducting some serious Lopex III R&D at Teahupoo in 2006. Guys a legend. www.freestyleusa.com

Sage Erickson 2nd at 2011 Swatch Girls Pro

Swatch Girls Pro 2011 Seignosse Hossegor
Sage Erickson | 2011 Swatch Girls Pro | Runner-Up

Big congratulations to Sage Erickson for a fantastic finish in the 2011 Swatch Girls Pro. While she would have preferred ending up victorious, 2nd place is the next best thing. And with this being her second runner-up finish of the year, Sage is a virtual lock to qualify for the 2012 World Tour. One cool thing to note is that Sage did so well in a contest sponsored by one of our competitors, Swatch Watch. Often when people see our colorfull line of Shark Watches they say, “oh, like the swatch watches from the 80’s?” We are always a bit confused by that comparison. Besides both Freestyle and Swatch having colorful watches and both considered 80’s Watches, the similarities stop there. Freestyle Shark Watches are all water resistant to 100 Meters and backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Shark watches were originally made for surfers and have since transcended into the fashion world while Swatch were more a fashion statement and they are trying to authenticate themselves in surf by sponsoring surf contests. Fine with us, especially when a Freestyle Sponsored Athlete like Sage Erickson does so well in a surf contest sponsored by swatch watch. Like they say, there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition between brands. It really helps keep on our toes to make sure we continue to make the best watches for surfers while maintain a look and fashion edge that is still relevant out of the water. Surfing is a lifestyle, it’s not just about what you do in the water; it is about how you live your life from dawn to dusk. Explore the entire line of Freestyle Shark Watches in the Shark Watch Shop.

Rail Slide to hit by Car

Always look for on coming traffic prior to take off.

If you remember from a month ago when we posted a previous Peep Show girl PMS misadventure, also known as a near death experience, then this next near death exprience may not be so surprising. This maneuver is called rail slide to hit by car. Brutal, and like always the Peep Show girl bounces back like the energizer bunny to ride another day. The Peep Show girls are gnarlier than most guys, and there’s no shame in admitting it. Here’s PMS Misadventure Episode 4. Freestyleusa.com

Freebording

Pro Freebord riders making the difficult look easy.

The more you see footage of Pro Freebord riders making the difficult looks so effortless the more it makes you wonder why more people haven’t taken this sport up. It’s got to be the closest thing to snowboarding; only difference is when you crash it’s going to remove some skin which is probably what keeps most people away. For now we’ll just keep on watching, but sooner than later we’ll be giving it a go. Maybe the guys at Freebord will hook us up with a demo since we keep posting the videos? It’s hard to deny that this looks like a shit ton of fun. Freestyleusa.com

Cory Lopez - Slow Motion Lip Destruction

It’s amazing what digital SLR cameras are doing for video these days. Peep this groovy Slow Motion edit from Blake Kueny aka Ginger Vision www.Ginger-vision.com, featuring Freestyle Surf Watch rider Cory Lopez shot with a canon rebel t2i at 60 fps with a 70-200 2.8 lens with a 2x teleconverter. The video looks like it was shot before or during a down day at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Too bad Cory lost a tough heat to Bede Durbidge in round 3, but I’m sure he enjoyed surfing some of the really great waves in the region. Look for Cory Lopez to have a better showing at the upcoming 2011 Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro which kicks off on May 3rd. Click here for the Freestyle Watch Blog’s Nike 6.0 Lowers preview.

Matthias Giraud Avalanche Ski BASE Cliff Jump

21 Apr

Not many people in the world can say they have similar experiences to Matthias Giraud. He’s charging life at a whole other level than the rest of us. Rest assured his stunts are carefully calculated and planned, but it still takes major sack to point your skis off a cliff and put all your trust in the parachute on your back. Here’s some amazing footage all shot with GoPro HD cameras of Matthias Giraud launching Ski BASE off a cliff followed by an amazing avalanch. It’s all on the video, just sit back watch, and be stunned.

Scott Caan Surfing Malibu on an Alaia

20 Apr

Who knew that Scott Caan, currently starring as Danno on Hawaii Five-O, likes to surf? Actually, we also had no idea he was also a photographer? It’s always nice to find out that stars like to do the same stuff we do. That’s why it’s refreshing to find this video of Mr. Caan surfing Malibu Point on an Alaia. Especially since Alaia’s really aren’t the easiest boards to ride, but he’s got it down pretty good. Good on you Scott Caan, we’re going to have to start tuning into Hawaii Five-O now. Thanks to Mike Kew for filming and editing. The song fits perfect an puts a nice vibe into the edit.

Josh Sleigh - Surfing Kick Flip - Photo by JL

By now you’ve probably heard of the controversy regarding Volcom’s $10,000 surfing kickflip Challenge that was reluctantly rewarded to Zoltan Torkos. Apparently, in the fine print the surfing kickflip had to be “above the lip” to be legit. So to turn some negative press into a positive, the good folks at Volcom have upped the “above the lip” kickflip challenge to a $20,000 prize. That’s enough to make Josh Sleigh give the surfing kickflip another round of serious attention. Here’s his latest near make. Unfortunately, as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Good luck Josh, if anybody can pull this off, our money’s on you! And we’ll also let you all in on a secret. A good surf watch can give you the competitive edge you need www.freestyleusa.com

In case you missed Zoltan, $10,000 kickflip, here it is below. First one ever pulled. Pretty cool to compare the two clips. The fact that Zoltan’s was shot from the cliff didn’t help with the “above the lip” criteria. Note to self, always film from sea level so the “above the lip” reference point is clear and undeniable. Good luck to anybody going for the 20k prize. If you win, you are gnarly!

Bodysurfing – Come Hell or High Water

13 Apr

Come Hell or High Water

Liz Clark frame grab from Hell or High Water.

Come Hell or High Water it’s about time bodysurfing got a little love. Leave it up to Keith Malloy, Woodshed Films and the good folks at Patagonia to bring some insight into the world of bodysurfing, in a film titled Come Hell or High Water. It’s really so much more that riding a wave, it’s about being one with the ocean. If you’ve never bodysurfed, it’s never too late to give it a go. Like they say, it’s a film a taking a breath and kicking your feet in the big blue see. The film features watermen such as Liz Clark, Mark Cunningham, Koa Watson, Crystal Thornburg, Fletcher Chouinard, Jeff Johnson, Belinda Baggs, Mike Stewart, Chris Malloy, Keith Malloy and many more bodysurfing enthusiasts. Enjoy the trailer.

Backside 1080 Double Cork with Spencer Whiting

4 Apr

I am Spencer Whiting

I will pull this trick. There will be no surrender.

16 year old Spencer Whiting has been putting his time in at Mammoth over the past few seasons and this year he began his quest to land backside 1080 double corks. Not only is he pulling them now, he’s also found himself gracing the pages of the April 2011 issue of America’s favorite birdcage liner, Blisss Magazine. So what we are saying is that Spencer is ripping like a boss and you can expect to see and hear more from this kid from here on out. Oh and one more thing, practice makes perfect as you can see in Spencer Whitings Double Cork video.

Hangover 2 Trailer

2 Apr

Without a doubt, The Hangover was one of the funniest movies of the past decade. Gut wrenching laughter throughout, and judging from this Hangover 2 Trailer, it looks like we are in for much of the same in Hangover 2. Even though the Hangover 2 trailer has a similar feel to the orginal hangover, it just doesn’t seem to get old watching the wolfpack of Phil (Bradley Cooper, 36), Alan (Zach Galifianakis, 41) and Stu (Ed Helms, 37) wreaking havoc and wrecking themselves all over again. The movie is due out Memorial Day Weekend, which perfect timing as far as we are concerned. Everybody like to get their party on Memorial Day Weekend. Just do yourself a favor and and keep your wolfpack under control.
