Surf Expo Foot Massages with Stance Socks

14 Sep

Happy Feet

Stance Socks x Foot Massage = Happy Feet

During Surf Expo probably the coolest promotion going was the Stance Socks foot massage. In return for donating your old socks (which were then to be washed and given to the homeless, way cool!), you got to pick out a new pair of Stance Socks and receive a foot massage from a lovely young lady. After spending 8 hours on your feet, this was like a dream come true. I did have to part with one of my favorite pairs of socks from a brand that will remain anonymous, but in the end it was totally worth it. I picked out a pair of the Stance Gripper Cush Skate Socks which actually have cushioned footpads on the bottom for more cushion when your stomping landings. Nice work bros, and thanks for the socks!

Hooray for the PacSun Bikini Flash Mob

13 Jul

Finally a really awesome flash mob!

Bikini Flash Mob? Approved!

Finally a flash mob that does it right. It doesn’t matter if they aren’t in sync or that it’s not the biggest flash mob ever, but as long as there’s a bunch of girls dancing around in their bikinis it’s a flash mob done right. The only things these lovely ladies are missing are Shark Watches that match their bikinis. Same for the dudes, they need shark watches on their wrists to match up with their boardshorts. PacSun, are you hearing this? Shark Watches would be the icing on cake for sure.

BMX Rider Shuts Down 405 Freeway

23 Apr

This is one for the books. An 18 Year old on a BMX bike gets police escort off the 405 Freeway. You know how it goes, they shut down all lanes of the Freeway to get this kid safely to the nearest offramp. His buddies probably bet him $100 or a new bike or something if he’d actually ride his bike on the freestyle. Ultimately, a stupid move by the BMX rider but a pretty classic situation. I bet all those cars he held up are pissed. Kids, don’t try this…ever!

Scott Caan Surfing Malibu on an Alaia

20 Apr

Who knew that Scott Caan, currently starring as Danno on Hawaii Five-O, likes to surf? Actually, we also had no idea he was also a photographer? It’s always nice to find out that stars like to do the same stuff we do. That’s why it’s refreshing to find this video of Mr. Caan surfing Malibu Point on an Alaia. Especially since Alaia’s really aren’t the easiest boards to ride, but he’s got it down pretty good. Good on you Scott Caan, we’re going to have to start tuning into Hawaii Five-O now. Thanks to Mike Kew for filming and editing. The song fits perfect an puts a nice vibe into the edit.

Photographer Chris Jordan and the Midway Journey

12 Apr

Photograph by Chris Jordan

This is real.

A lot of talk has surfaced about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. While the problem is real it’s also really easy to turn a blind eye and continue consuming plastic products as if they don’t have any effect on the planet. Let’s face it, we all use plastic products at an alarming rate, it’s almost impossible not to use them. Sometimes it takes visionaries like photographer Chris Jordan to bring the crisis to our senses in a powerful and undeniable way. It is difficult to look at these images. Without a doubt they force you to feel a sense of hopelessness or even shame, but as Chris Jordan mentions in the interview, these are not meant to paralyze us into doom and gloom, rather they are meant to be a wakeup call to inspire us to face the horrors of our time and collectively respond by making new choices about our dependence on plastic. We applaud Chris Jordan for bringing the plight of the Midway Island Albatross to light. We are inspired. We have some thinking to do about materials we use in our freestyle watch bands. What can we do to make Freestyle Watches more environmentally friendly? Can we recycle plastics for our bands to help keep them out of the ocean? Is there an eco-friendly plastic like product we can develop in the future? These are all questions that these horrific images have inspired in us. What have they inspired in you? We’d also like to point out that no response is too little. Even grassroots organizations like Surf Happens are helping the plastic problem through their Plastic Experiment documentary project. Lots of little things turn into big things and The Plastic Experiment illustrates simple steps you can take to start making a difference.

Cat and Dolphin Love Fest

12 Apr

Chicken of the Sea?

hey, you're kinda cute. You're not bad yourself. Let's get it on.

This is some remarkable footage of a Cat monkeying around with some dolphins. We humans seem to have so much trouble getting along, but these animals just accept their differences and turn it into a full on love fest. When you’re feelling down, just watch this video.

Strange Hail in Newport Beach

11 Apr

46th Street in Newport

April 9th, 2011 - Newport Hail Storm - Weather Gone Wild

Saturday, April 9th, 2011 – 6:30am. If you happened to be dawn patrolling in Newport Beach in the 48th Street area you definitely saw a sight you’ve never seen before in Newport. The beach streets were covered in hail to the point where at a distance it actually looked like a dusting snow. The strangest thing was that it was only in this small 2 block area that had this large amount of hail. In fact, most areas in Orange County did not even experience much rain if any. What a morning to forget your booties, which is exactly what I did. Running through the hail felt really nice on the feet. Not! But the good news is once I hit the water it actually felt warm. Problem was my feet never really recovered from the morning ice dance so it felt like I was surfing on a couple clubs with no toes. Anyways, pretty cool morning and one that will probably never happen again. Everything was melted by about 9am, so not too many people actually witnessed this strange occurrence. Good news is that the weather is really supposed to warm up this week so maybe Spring is here to stay and Summer is on its way.

The Rig Watch X Air Filter

9 Apr

Came accross this shot from the archives of the Rig Watch. While we already posted a Freestyle Watch of the Week for the Rig, this shot is just cool not to see the light of day. So here it is sitting pretty on the air filter of a Harley. Sweet.
