US Open of Surfing Crowd

Anyone want to go to a party?

If you haven’t already been down to the circus like atmosphere of the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing, it’s time for you to set aside some time to dive into all the hoopla. Here’s some images of what went down last year. While there are a million things going on from motocross to skate to BMX to live music to outrageous parties and rubbing elbows with all the great athletes and brands, at the heart of it all the event is still just a surfing competition. All the hype created by all the people on the beach just ads to excitement for the surfers in the water. Just ask Sage Erickson, as she explains in this video. Winning the US Open in front of thousands of people is an exhilarating experience and just makes you hungry to want to win again. While Sage is not competing in the Women’s Pro Jr. this year, she is battling it out in the Women’s division. Here’s to great event! www.freestyleusa.com

Sage Erickson | 2011 Swatch Girls Pro | Runner-Up

Big congratulations to Sage Erickson for a fantastic finish in the 2011 Swatch Girls Pro. While she would have preferred ending up victorious, 2nd place is the next best thing. And with this being her second runner-up finish of the year, Sage is a virtual lock to qualify for the 2012 World Tour. One cool thing to note is that Sage did so well in a contest sponsored by one of our competitors, Swatch Watch. Often when people see our colorfull line of Shark Watches they say, “oh, like the swatch watches from the 80’s?” We are always a bit confused by that comparison. Besides both Freestyle and Swatch having colorful watches and both considered 80’s Watches, the similarities stop there. Freestyle Shark Watches are all water resistant to 100 Meters and backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Shark watches were originally made for surfers and have since transcended into the fashion world while Swatch were more a fashion statement and they are trying to authenticate themselves in surf by sponsoring surf contests. Fine with us, especially when a Freestyle Sponsored Athlete like Sage Erickson does so well in a surf contest sponsored by swatch watch. Like they say, there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition between brands. It really helps keep on our toes to make sure we continue to make the best watches for surfers while maintain a look and fashion edge that is still relevant out of the water. Surfing is a lifestyle, it’s not just about what you do in the water; it is about how you live your life from dawn to dusk. Explore the entire line of Freestyle Shark Watches in the Shark Watch Shop.

Behind the scenes with Sage

30 Jan

Thanks to O’neill and Nylon TV for this behind the scenes look at the latest O’neill Girls Bikini photo shoot. Sage Erickson and Malia Manuel share their insights into whats coming out cool. As a side note, there is an interesting tone to the comments on the youtube page such as, “i like this shoot, because i would rather have the world look up to athletic healthy girls than the stick skinny/drug addict models that feed into girls insecurities.” You know what, we couldn’t aggree more. It’s good to see brands using authentic athletes before scary skinny models to promote their goods. What do you think?

The Crowd at the 2010 US Open of Surfing

In a crowd like this you are guaranteed to see some interesting folks

With the US Open of Surfing moving out of town we’ve had some time to reflect and review the tons of images we shot. One thing for sure, Nike sure knows how to put on an event. Throughout the week there were many “circus” references upwelling on facebook and twitter, and we have to agree that it was a circus, a big crazy surf circus. While there was great action in the water from the Pro Surfers, some of the most interesting things were happening on the land. From NBA stars to (more…)

At arguably the biggest surfing event in history, Sage Erickson surfed to victory in the 2010 US Open of Surfing Pro Junior Women. By far the most prestigious win of Sage’s young career, with the estimated crowd on the beach over 100,000, it’s safe to say she’ll remember this one for a long long time.
