Bede Durbidge has found himself on the cover of the latest issue Tracks Magazine. Otherwise known as the Surfers Bible, tracks magazine is Australia’s premiere surfing magazine with some of the best photos in the business. Congratulations Bede! And good luck in J-Bay! Freestyleusa.com
Big congratulations to Sage Erickson for a fantastic finish in the 2011 Swatch Girls Pro. While she would have preferred ending up victorious, 2nd place is the next best thing. And with this being her second runner-up finish of the year, Sage is a virtual lock to qualify for the 2012 World Tour. One cool thing to note is that Sage did so well in a contest sponsored by one of our competitors, Swatch Watch. Often when people see our colorfull line of Shark Watches they say, “oh, like the swatch watches from the 80’s?” We are always a bit confused by that comparison. Besides both Freestyle and Swatch having colorful watches and both considered 80’s Watches, the similarities stop there. Freestyle Shark Watches are all water resistant to 100 Meters and backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Shark watches were originally made for surfers and have since transcended into the fashion world while Swatch were more a fashion statement and they are trying to authenticate themselves in surf by sponsoring surf contests. Fine with us, especially when a Freestyle Sponsored Athlete like Sage Erickson does so well in a surf contest sponsored by swatch watch. Like they say, there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition between brands. It really helps keep on our toes to make sure we continue to make the best watches for surfers while maintain a look and fashion edge that is still relevant out of the water. Surfing is a lifestyle, it’s not just about what you do in the water; it is about how you live your life from dawn to dusk. Explore the entire line of Freestyle Shark Watches in the Shark Watch Shop.
South Swell | May 20th 2011 | Between 44th and 48th Streets in Newport Beach This is a follow up post to our teaser post last Friday. Here’s the full helping of perfect wave images and sequences. Over the weekend we heard a lot of people wanking about how walled the swell was and that they didn’t get any good ones. The truth is all these shots were taken on Friday morning before 7:30 am, so if you were on it early you got the goods like Jared Thorne, Taylor Thorne and Chad LaBass. Later in the morning was not quite as tubular and didn’t have such good shape. Early bird gets the worm as they say. Hopefully this swell is a sign of a good summer ahead. Check out the slideshow of 5 sequences from the morning below. www.freestyleusa.com
Nick Lamb | Puerto Escondido | May 19th, 2011. Holy tube rides batman! This is an epic surfboard ride by Nic Lamb from Puerto Escondido on May 19th, 2011. This wave is so heavy, yet so perfect. Either way, it takes major sack to paddle over the ledge on bomb like this. Heads up, there’s some potty mouth going on in the video, so earmuff your kids if you have any. Epic ride. Freestyleusa.com
This is the first of 2 posts. We’ve had a mighty fine south swell running for the past two days. You’ve seen yesterday’s images from The Wedge, and today we bring you a glimpse into the perfection that went down this morning in the Newport Jetties. These are all shot from 48th street jetty towards 44th. There were tons of perfect tubes going un-ridden, as it was a challenge to hunt them down with the current, but a few guys were making kills like Jared and Taylor Thorne. This is just a tease, we’ll do another post in the coming with a couple more sequences, including Jared Thorne’s claim of the year. It was a serious claim, but then again when’s the last time you saw a no grab backside tube ride exiting with spit in Newport? You would be pumped too. Freestyleusa.com
Surf Watch – Wednesday May 19th, 2011 – The Wedge roars to life with the first major south swell of the 2011 season. Check the slideshow below for a heap of killer images from huge newport wedge this morning. Once again, Spencer Pirdy was the man out there on a surfboard. Bagging bombs. Got to love when the wedge lives up to it’s name. There really is nothing like the wedge wave, it’s so unique. Tomorrow looks to me more of the same, good luck to those who will be charging. May 19th, 2011. Wedge had some bombs today. Spencer Pirdy was hands down the stand out surfer and no doubt the leading contender for the Ghetto Juice Big Wedge Challenge presented by ERGO. Check back later for full sequences and gallery from this morning. Freestyleusa.com

Even though they are landlocked, the crew at Slayshtank never takes a day off from surfing. They hold down their love for surfing by riding waves via boat wake, and they do it right. Want proof, here’s a picture perfect example of how wakesurfing is done right. Peep these photos of Chase Hazen wakesurfing from photographer Bradford King. Hopefully you’re enjoying your weekend as much as these guys. freestyleusa.com
Man of steel or a serious over estimation in water temp?
How cold is too cold for you not to wear a wetsuit? This morning the water temp in Newport was around 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit and this guy just went skipping into the lineup. Brave Soul. That’s way too cold to trunk it in our book. www.freestyleusa.com
It’s amazing what digital SLR cameras are doing for video these days. Peep this groovy Slow Motion edit from Blake Kueny aka Ginger Vision www.Ginger-vision.com, featuring Freestyle Surf Watch rider Cory Lopez shot with a canon rebel t2i at 60 fps with a 70-200 2.8 lens with a 2x teleconverter. The video looks like it was shot before or during a down day at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Too bad Cory lost a tough heat to Bede Durbidge in round 3, but I’m sure he enjoyed surfing some of the really great waves in the region. Look for Cory Lopez to have a better showing at the upcoming 2011 Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro which kicks off on May 3rd. Click here for the Freestyle Watch Blog’s Nike 6.0 Lowers preview.
Who knew that Scott Caan, currently starring as Danno on Hawaii Five-O, likes to surf? Actually, we also had no idea he was also a photographer? It’s always nice to find out that stars like to do the same stuff we do. That’s why it’s refreshing to find this video of Mr. Caan surfing Malibu Point on an Alaia. Especially since Alaia’s really aren’t the easiest boards to ride, but he’s got it down pretty good. Good on you Scott Caan, we’re going to have to start tuning into Hawaii Five-O now. Thanks to Mike Kew for filming and editing. The song fits perfect an puts a nice vibe into the edit.
The 2011 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is on! Day one went down with some incredible conditions that unfortunately deteriorated throughout the day. Both Freestyle Surf Watch Team riders Cory Lopez and Bede Durbidge had tough heats, and will be competing against each other in the elimination round 2 today. To Watch the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach Live click here. For Cory Lopez it is his first trip back to Bells Beach since his 10 year stint on the World Tour ended 3 years ago, so he’s frothing for a good result to keep him on tour all year. We wish him luck!
Cory Lopez and his Lopex III Watch
For Bede Durbidge, he’s had great results at Bells in the past including coming in 2nd to Kelly Slater in 2008. While Bede had a shocker in the years first event at Snapper Rocks, he’s looking to rebound with a solide result at Bells. See below for an exerpt from Bede’s Blog to get some insight direct from the competitive mind of Bede Durbidge. Look for him to light up his heat in round 2.
By now you’ve probably heard of the controversy regarding Volcom’s $10,000 surfing kickflip Challenge that was reluctantly rewarded to Zoltan Torkos. Apparently, in the fine print the surfing kickflip had to be “above the lip” to be legit. So to turn some negative press into a positive, the good folks at Volcom have upped the “above the lip” kickflip challenge to a $20,000 prize. That’s enough to make Josh Sleigh give the surfing kickflip another round of serious attention. Here’s his latest near make. Unfortunately, as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Good luck Josh, if anybody can pull this off, our money’s on you! And we’ll also let you all in on a secret. A good surf watch can give you the competitive edge you need www.freestyleusa.com
In case you missed Zoltan, $10,000 kickflip, here it is below. First one ever pulled. Pretty cool to compare the two clips. The fact that Zoltan’s was shot from the cliff didn’t help with the “above the lip” criteria. Note to self, always film from sea level so the “above the lip” reference point is clear and undeniable. Good luck to anybody going for the 20k prize. If you win, you are gnarly!
