US Open of Surfing

And it was only Thursday

And another update from the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. On Thursday we had a couple promos with Cory Lopez and Bede Durbidge at HSS and Jacks so headed down early to survey the scene. Doesn’t anybody work? What a madhouse! It’s hard to imagine what it will be like on the weekend, but you can bet it will be standing room only throughout the entire event area. So were making the official claim, the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing is the biggest circus Huntington Beach has ever seen. This may be a dream for some people and a nightmare for others. Depending on your view of big events like this you will either join the masses on the weekend or run like heck in the other direction. We advise you join the masses, especially if you’re a dude. You have never seen so many beautiful girls running around in tiny bikinis in your entire life. It is mindboggling and wonderful. You don’t have to give a darn about surfing either, there’s so much going on in the event area you may not even make it to watch any surfing. Plus the waves were really tiny and slow, so the action away from the ocean was generally more exciting. Good thing the swell from Hurricane Eugene is set to pump in Friday through the weekend. As we meandered through the crowded event area, we were lucky enough to catch The Sounds sound checking for their show later in the day. They sounded awesome, especially on the beach! Enough already, here are some shots from around the event and our US Open of Surfing poster signings with Bede Durbidge and Cory Lopez. Enjoy! www.freestyleusa.com

Good Morning HB!

Here’s a quick recap of yesterday early morning action at the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. Freestyle rider Bede Durbidge was up early for his heat and took top honors to move on to the next round. While the waves continue to be meager, the boys are making the most of it in hopes of surviving to the weekend when a decent swell from Hurricane Eugene is forecast to arrive. Best of luck to Bede in the rest of the event! www.freestyleusa.com

Cory Lopez | Setting the Shark Watch

With the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing in full swing we headed down to check out some of the action and catch Cory Lopez in the first heat of the morning. While the waves on offer were weak and meager, the boys still put on an amazing show. With Cory being sponsored by Freestyle, we may be a bit biased, but he got robbed and lost out by .6 of a point. The backside reverse he pulled in the last minute of the heat was like hitting a 3 at the buzzer in basketball. It was clutch and he should have been awarded the points needed to move on. Regardless, he surfed really well and you can bet he’ll get them next time.

After the heat we headed down to Newport for a free surf and Cory put on an above the lip show in some pretty cruddy surf. It is ridiculous how fun he can make bad surf look. In fact, it should be illegal. Here’s a bunch of shots of the scene of the crime. www.freestyleusa.com

US Open of Surfing Crowd

Anyone want to go to a party?

If you haven’t already been down to the circus like atmosphere of the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing, it’s time for you to set aside some time to dive into all the hoopla. Here’s some images of what went down last year. While there are a million things going on from motocross to skate to BMX to live music to outrageous parties and rubbing elbows with all the great athletes and brands, at the heart of it all the event is still just a surfing competition. All the hype created by all the people on the beach just ads to excitement for the surfers in the water. Just ask Sage Erickson, as she explains in this video. Winning the US Open in front of thousands of people is an exhilarating experience and just makes you hungry to want to win again. While Sage is not competing in the Women’s Pro Jr. this year, she is battling it out in the Women’s division. Here’s to great event! www.freestyleusa.com

Amyloidosis Sucks!

Amyloidosis Sucks!

It’s that time of year again when the good old boys from Ocean City New Jersey put on the annual Chip Miller Surf Fest in support of amyloidosis. We were proud to be a part of the 2010 event, and it was a no brainer to be on board for 2011. Amyloidosis is a little known illness that claimed the life of Chip Miller in 2004 and we are proud to support the event in his name to help increase amyloidosis research and awareness. Amyloidosis is a group of diseases in which one or more organ systems in the body accumulate deposits of abnormal proteins known as amyloid. The name “amyloidosis” was first used more than 100 years ago, but cases were described over 300 years ago. However, only within the past 25 years have physicians understood the specific make-up and structure of amyloid proteins. Although amyloidosis is not cancer, it is very serious and can be very disabling and life threatening. However, growing awareness of the condition seems to be leading to substantial new research and treatment alternatives which is the goal the 8th Annual Chip Miller Surf Fest. For more information, please visit the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation. Be there if you can!

Hammerhead Watch Review from a U.S. Soldier

27 Jul

Soldiers!

We are honored to have our Hammerhead alongside a Purple Heart

Every once in a while we get reviews sent in regarding the performance of our watches. We love to get them, both positive and negative; as they help show us our strengths while also letting us know where we need to step up our game. We share these with our product development team, marketing, and sales as they really can help motivate and keep us rolling in the right direction. The following Freestyle Hammerhead Watch review, from a U.S. Soldier who has asked to remain anonymous, is probably the most awesome review we have ever received. After reading this, you’ll probably agree and all we ask is the next time you see a man or woman who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, don’t hesitate to tell them Thank You for fighting for our country.

Subject: My Freestyle Dive Watch

Dear Freestyle,

This isn’t really a suggestion, as it’s more of a compliment to your product. I purchased my Freestyle Hammerhead dive watch back in 2004 or 2005-ish for about $80.00. I’ve had Casio G-Shock dive watches before and they all have failed after a couple years. I purchased your watch mainly because it was on sale – not knowing very much about Freestyle watches.

I was in the Army Infantry and was deployed to Iraq in 2006. I was severely wounded when an enemy grenade was thrown at me and blew up at my feet. Everything that I was wearing, including all my body armor, was destroyed and I had sustained 27 holes to my body, including a gaping hole to my abdomen with my guts hanging outside my body. I was wearing your watch at the time. Luckily, I did not receive any severely debilitating wounds and have recovered well.

When my personal effects were returned to me, I was astonished that my Freestyle watch was still fully functional. Casio G-Shock watches have always advertised that they can withstand a lot of abuse, but from my experience with their watches, I highly doubt they could have withstood a grenade blast at point blank range.

It is now 2011 and I still wear my Freestyle dive watch today. Whenever I talk about what happened to me, I always mention that my watch survived…and, how it is very personal to me, because it is the only thing that I wear that was with me when I was blown up. The only things I have ever had to replace on this watch is the battery and watch band.

I don’t know much about the quality of your other watches (obviously I don’t have to), but I would like for you to know that I hope you use the same attention to quality as you have with MY watch. With so many products out there today that don’t come close to meeting my quality expectations, it’s good to know that there IS at least one product that does.

Thanks for making a great watch!

Sincerely,

U.S. Soldier

Hooray for the PacSun Bikini Flash Mob

13 Jul

Finally a really awesome flash mob!

Bikini Flash Mob? Approved!

Finally a flash mob that does it right. It doesn’t matter if they aren’t in sync or that it’s not the biggest flash mob ever, but as long as there’s a bunch of girls dancing around in their bikinis it’s a flash mob done right. The only things these lovely ladies are missing are Shark Watches that match their bikinis. Same for the dudes, they need shark watches on their wrists to match up with their boardshorts. PacSun, are you hearing this? Shark Watches would be the icing on cake for sure.

Anthony Walsh | Indo. Great surfers can ride just about anything in any conditions. Sometimes experiments go well, sometimes not so much. It can be easy to say for the sidelines that the board was too small, too big, to flat, too many fins not enough and so on and so on. But in this case, it’s clear that Anthony Walsh and this 5′7″ Wayne Webster Quad is a match made in heaven. As long as you consider heaven to be a heaving right slab in Indo, you’re on the same page as us.
