The Freestyle Blog

Welcome to the Official Blog for Freestyle and Shark Watches.
Featuring mind benders, funny sh*t, amazing rides, crazy people, behind the scenes shenanigans and anything and everything that keeps the Freestyle office a buzz. We may not play the same sport or have the same passions, we may not have the same gender, religion or faith, we may not live in the same country, city, or state, but we all spend our days breathing, bleeding and sweating the same way. At the end of the day it's all about performance and together we are Freestyle, we are performance timing, and this is our blog.

Clifford the raddest little watch wearing dog in the world

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

We have blogged about Melissa Marquardt’s little dog named Clifford in the past, and we can’t help but pump the little guy up again. Clifford loves wakeboarding and loves the camera and once again he stole the show. He didn’t mind at all when Melissa put Shark Watches on 3 of his legs. This dog needs to go to Hollywood. We eventually had to ignore Clifford so we could nail this new action shot of Melissa. More on this photo shoot coming soon!

Cool down the summer heat with The Day of the Living Shred snowboard teaser

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It’s been scorching in Southern California. Triple digit temps inland, and 90’s at the beach. Times like these are when you forget snowboarding is even possible, especially in Southern California. Fortunately, our buddy Nick Rockwood snapped us back into reality with his new snowboard teaser, Day of the Living Shred, from last season’s footage from Bear Mountain featuring Nick, Devin Allen, Shane Heckman, Evan Heckman, and Chris Hart. Nice work boys, way to give Bear a real shredding!

In it for the long haul - the Teddy Navarro Interview

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Ted the Shred Navarro, one of the hardest working pros in the business, dropped by the office to give us some face time. If you’re a young surfer who lives miles from the ocean, you’ll be happy to know that Teddy is originally from Whittier, CA which is at least an hour from the coast! Teddy has proved that if you work hard, want it bad enough, and shred good enough, you too can make it as a pro. Of course, Teddy now lives in HB and shreds the pier daily when he’s not competing in contests or traveling the globe. Here’s a look into Shreddy’s world.

Freestyle: T-Nav’s, Ted the Shred, Shreddy, and the list goes on. What’s your favorite nickname?

Teddy: I prefer Shred Doctor, Yeoman’s calls me that.

Freestyle: You’ve been at the pro surfing game for a long time, how’s the ride?

Teddy: Ups and downs, stagnate at times, but bottom line is you get what you put into it, so I been putting in a lot.

Freestyle: You’ve been a busy lately, we heard you’ve been collecting some hardware?

Teddy: F-ya! I just pulled three 2nd’s in a row, then a first round clown, then refocused and won the Switchfoot Bro-Am with Team Reef, and backed it up with a win at the SunDiego Pro/Am Championship Event. 3-Grand deep! I raked in about $6,600 from the SunDiego contests this year, got to love it!

Freestyle: So now that you got some fresh cash in your pocket, you got any plans?

Teddy: Costa Rica tomorrow, then to Teahupoo for round 2 at the end of July. I surfed the pre-trials swell this year, so I want to go back and get some big deep barrels! I’m just trying to keep up with Nic Lamb, even though he’s younger than me.

Freestyle: What do you think about Kelly Slater dominating the World Tour…again?

Teddy: Old Guys Rule!

Freestyle: So who is currently supporting the Teddy Navarro Freedom Fund?

Teddy: Freestyle of course, Reef thanks Nutty, Hoven Sunglasses, and Katin Surf Shop.

Freestyle: When you are not shredding, what do you do with your time?

Teddy: Nothing, I’m always shredding!

Freestyle: Do you see any local HB groms stepping it up, you know, trying to take your pro surfer job?

Teddy: Ya, there’s a couple, but they got to get their heads straight first. Once they snap out of it, I’ll be out of a job. By then I’ll be looking for a Team Manager Position – you know…Coach Shreddy!

Freestyle: Right on Teddy, thanks for the knowledge, any last words for the people?

Teddy: Never say quit!

Eddie Villa and the ultimate retro Freestyle Watch collection

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Introducing, Eddie Villa, who we’ve come to learn may be Freestyle’s biggest fan. Eddie currently works at Val Surf and still shreds the skate park with in his free time. His history with Freestyle goes way back, here’s a look into Eddie’s mind and endless supply of retro freestyle watches.

Freestyle: So Eddie, we understand you might be the number 1 collector of Classic Freestyle watches on the planet?

Eddie: Hell Ya!

Freestyle: What was your first experience with Freestyle?

Eddie: When I was 11 my brother, Kurt Wastell, came home from Surfing West one day with a shark watch, I absolutely tripped. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

Freestyle: Why’d you start collecting them? Honestly, we didn’t even know some of these existed?

Eddie: The thing was, when Kurt still worked at Surfing West, I would hang out at the shop all time, so I saw all the different colors and styles, and I realized that not all colors would be made forever, so I started collecting my favorites.

Freestyle: So we are going to send some of these to our development team to see if we can bring them back to life, what do you think about that?

Eddie: I think it’s the raddest thing in the world. I couldn’t be happier. I think you should have never stopped making these, they are what made Freestyle blow up in the first place.

Freestyle: oh so you’re calling us out, are you saying we blew it?

Eddie: Haha…yep you blew it, you should have never stopped making the classics, but looks like you guys are making up for it now, so I’m stoked.

Freestyle: So what are you up to these days, maybe we need to find you a desk in the office?

Eddie: Just working at Val Surf, selling the crap out of Freestyle. Everybody at Val says I should be working at Freestyle. Why don’t you get my desk ready, and make sure there’s a stocked mini-fridge. I’m thirsty!

Freestyle: So we hear you also shred on a skateboard, are the rumors true?

Eddie: Um, I’m all washed up, but I guess I still get after it. Post my handplant in this interview, let the people decide…haha!

Freestyle: Ok, here it is, but you’re not even wearing watch in this pick, you’re fired before you’re hired!

Eddie: ah come on, I don’t like to wear my super old Freestyle’s skating, I want to keep them in perfect condition. Don’t worry, these days I wear the new Shark Classic. That shot from last year so get off my back, haha!

Freestyle: Right on Eddie, thanks for the support! Any last words before we kick you out of here?

Eddie: I think that anybody that rides any kind of board should get themselves a shark watch. And you better hire me if you know what’s good for you, don’t forget about my mini-fridge!
